Dating abuse prevention counselors help parents to 1) understand the dynamics of abusive relationships; 2) recognize the danger signs of abuse; 3) improve communication with their child; 4) act as a resource for their child; and 5) utilize school and community resources.This document presents information about dating violence, the types of dating abuse, its effect, and prevalence of dating violence in both heterosexual and LGBT relationships.The document also presents suggestions for dating violence prevention programs.These documents draw from various studies that use different measures. More than 1 in 5 women and nearly 1 in 7 men who have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner first experienced some form of intimate partner violence between 11 and 17 years of age (CDC, 2011).In a survey of 500 teen and young adults, 57% percent waited six months or more before seeking any help while 40% hadn’t talked to anyone about abusive behavior in their relationship (Mary Kay, 2014).
